Discord announced Friday morning that it is opening up its online store with 90% of all revenue going to game makers starting from 2019 onwards.

Discord's news came entitled “Why not 90/10?” by Jason Citron, The CEO and founder of Discord. He stated that since the launch, there are more than 200 million people who use the platform to chat and play games with others. He also stated that discord has helped bring developers and their fans closer together.

Also, he said “At the beginning of this year, the company noticed a change in the gaming industry. We talked to a number of developers, many of them feel that current stores are not earning their 30% of the usual 70/30 revenue share,”. Also, “Because of this, we now see developers creating their own stores and launchers to distribute their games instead of focusing on what’s really important — making great games and cultivating amazing communities.”

Citron ends the news by writing" in 2019 Discord will be extending access to the Discord store and its game patcher by releasing a self-serve game publishing platform”. “No matter what size, from AAA to single person teams, developers will be able to self publish on the Discord store with 90% revenue share going to the developer,” he wrote. “The remaining 10% covers our operating costs, and we’ll explore lowering it by optimizing our tech and making things more efficient".

Citron ended the news by saying the platform will focus on improving video, voice, and text chat, as it always does.

The company released a number of major upgrades and expansions, which includes evolving the Nitro subscription service, overhauling the Discord overlay, activity feed launch and the beta for the online store.

Numbers of publishers are growing who have started creating their own online stores and launchers like Blizzard, Activision, Ubisoft, and EA. The most noticeable changes in the online gaming industry will be the competition between Steam, Epic Games Store and Discord’s all-new game store, all of which are committed to selling games from a variety of developers.full-width
